Wikifactory: the Collaborative Manufacturing Platforms
With a community of over 90,000 designers, engineers, SMEs and hardware startups
Description
Wikifactory’s vision is to create an Internet of Production – bringing networked capability to digital product development and fabrication. The Community of product designers, engineers and enterprises come together to design, prototype and manufacture hardware products in more agile ways – with Wikifactory making the tools possible to do this. Through the cloud-based, product development Workspace, collaboration is enabled with control in a single agile environment – available to anyone and accessible anywhere.
Wikifactory’s motto is: ‘By changing how things are made, we can make things change’, with over half of the projects on the platform aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and this proving to be the fastest growing cluster on the platform.
Relevance
Just like the internet allows everyone to participate in the production and dissemination of ideas, a distributed infrastructure for physical products would mean anyone could participate in the design and production of physical things. By removing the barriers to participation and innovation in product design and manufacturing, how can great ideas have a better chance and a bigger positive impact on our world?
