Sustainable Business Model in Manufacturing

Integrating 17SDGs in the core business model is the way forward

Description
The need for long term value creation is immense which pushes the industry for adopting sustainability in the business model. The integration of 17SDGs in the business model could serve the purpose in a comprehensive way. At its heart, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) recognizes that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change.

The 17 SDGs is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.

Incorporating 17SDGs as part of the plan of action in the business model opens to more opportunities to create value and impact for the people and the planet while minimising the risks.

Relevance
Integrating 17SDGs in the business model exposes the companies to more opportunities to create value and impact for the people and the planet. The elaboration of 17SDGs is purposefully quite generic with specific 169 targets altogether. The primary principle behind the SDGs is regarded as “no one is left behind”. I believe based on this principle every business must look at its relevance regarding the SDGs in both direct and indirect ways. To put it in the perspective, here are some of the relevant SDGs – SDG #7 affordable and clean energy, SDG #8 decent work & economic growth, SDG #9 industry, innovation & infrastructure, SDG #12 responsible consumption & production, SDG #13 climate action, SDG #17 partnerships for the goals, SDG #5 Gender Equality etc.
