Our Ambition

EIT Manufacturing is an Innovation Community within the European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) – that connects the leading manufacturing actors in Europe. Fueled by a strong interdisciplinary and trusted community, we will add unique value to European products, processes, services – and inspire the creation of globally competitive and sustainable manufacturing.

The manufacturing industry is a global base for prosperity and key to Europe’s economic, social and environmental sustainability. Manufacturing is a main driver of industrial innovation, job creation and growth for the European society. It stands for over 2.1 million manufacturing enterprises in Europe, providing over 32 million jobs, which corresponds to 16% of the total EU working population, including approximately 13 million jobs in the growing high-tech manufacturing industry and in 2016, the share of EU-28 GDP originated by manufacturing was 16.1% (Eurostat, GDP percentage of total, industry breakdowns, 10.01.2018), corresponding to a total turnover of EUR 7.11 trillion (European Commission, Factories of the Future Manufacturing in Horizon 2020 and beyond, 2017).

EIT Manufacturing will establish an innovation community and build a network of ecosystems where people can acquire skills and find opportunities; and where innovators are able to attract investors and accede venture capital.

For that purpose, EIT Manufacturing brings together 60 European leading partners from business, education and research, from 17 countries.

Our Programmes

We are currently experiencing the fourth industrial revolution, which brings us new challenges and opportunities. EIT Manufacturing’s aim is not only to adapt to this global revolution, but to lead it. To do so, it will deliver nine powerful programmes that cover the Knowledge Triangle — Education, Innovation and Business Creation — for Added-Value Manufacturing:

Education: “Empower”, “Connect” and “Engage” talents and workforce
Innovation: “Launch”, “Develop” and “Grow” innovations
Business Creation: “Create”, “Accelerate” and “Transform” businesses

The programmes will address these challenges in a unique way:

1.  Adapt to exponential technological progress. Success is no longer determined by a narrow technology focus, but by a clear vision and the capacity to adapt.
2.  Make manufacturing a powerhouse for social impact.
3.  Overcome value network fragmentation in Europe.
4.  Transform knowledge into value more efficiently.

Our Flagships

EIT Manufacturing defined four Flagships as prime demonstrations of the community’s ability to solve complex challenges, while delivering high societal and industrial impact. EIT Manufacturing’s flagships are:

Flexible Production Systems for Competitive Manufacturing Low Environmental Footprint Systems & Circular Economy for Green Manufacturing Digital & Collaborative Solutions for Innovative Manufacturing Ecosystems Human-machine Co-working for Socially Sustainable Manufacturing
Emerging technologies enable almost limitless flexibility in product design and production, allowing full customer customisation. Using new technology to minimise use of resources, energy, and material in production systems enables new circular business models. Collaboration and business on digital platforms and value networks enables companies to create new and highly efficient value-chains. Smart use of automation and robots enables great workplaces, flexible production, and sustainable human work.

These Flagships add value to European manufacturing and address multiple strategic objectives. All flagships involve several programmes that cover a complete range of activities, training and up-skilling, and novel business models.

EIT Community

The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) is an independent EU body set up to empower innovators to turn their best ideas into products, services and jobs for Europe. It was created in 2008 to drive Europe’s ability to innovate. As an integral part of Horizon2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation 2014-2020, it is a unique EU initiative, the only that fully integrates business, education and research. The Institute supports the development of dynamic pan-European partnerships among leading universities, research labs and companies – the Innovation Communities. Each one focuses on a specific global challenge and, so far, eight of them have been created by the EIT addressing the areas of climate, digital, health, energy, food, raw materials, manufacturing and urban mobility.
